Lviv Theatre of Opera & Ballet
The classical opera house in Lviv sits on the edge of the Old City. It presides over a large, grand avenue that wraps around the city center. Before the opera house and avenue were built, the Poltva River flowed through the city at this point. The opera’s architect buried the river to build the opera on top. The river now flows beneath the opera and avenue, and the river is not visible anywhere in Lviv proper.
The opera house is a beautiful classical building with columns, statues set in niches, and gold and copper trimming. Inside, a grand entry staircase leads to the sumptuous theater interior complete with red velvet seating and ornate private balconies.
Turns out, the opera house is possibly the most popular place in all of Lviv for posed wedding photography. At least a half-dozen couples and wedding parties were having their photos taken throughout the building when we visited.
